Russian Poker

Basic casino rules

Overview

Russian Poker is a five-card poker game played against the dealer, a relative of Caribbean Stud Poker that is common in casinos in Russia and the CIS (listed on wizardofodds.com as Lunar Poker, also known as Russian Poker; see Variants and differences). Players do not compete with each other: each plays only against the dealer's hand.

Russian Poker rules vary a lot from casino to casino: which purchases are allowed and what they cost, how a non-qualifying dealer is paid, whether two hands can be paid at once, and the pay tables. A common version is described below; payouts follow the trainer's tables.

Bets

Game procedure

Drawing cards and the sixth card

Before making the play bet, the player may improve the hand in one of these ways (what is allowed, and how many times, depends on the casino):

Dealer qualification

The dealer qualifies with ace-king or any pair or better. If the dealer does not qualify (for example queen high, or an ace without a king), the no-game rule applies:

AsKd9c6h2s
The lowest qualifying dealer hand: ace-king.
AhQcJd8s4c
Does not qualify: an ace without a king and without a pair.

Deciding the winner and payouts

If the dealer qualifies, the player's hand is compared with the dealer's by hand rank and kickers:

Play bet pay table

The odds apply to the play bet, which is twice the ante: win = ante × 2 × odds. Pay tables vary between casinos; a typical table, also used in the trainer, is shown below.

Player handPays on play betWin with ante 100 (play 200)
Royal flush100 to 120,000
Straight flush50 to 110,000
Four of a kind20 to 14,000
Full house7 to 11,400
Flush5 to 11,000
Straight4 to 1800
Three of a kind3 to 1600
Two pair2 to 1400
Pair1 to 1200
Ace-king1 to 1200

When the player's hand wins, the ante is not paid — it is returned. The ante pays 1 to 1 only when the dealer does not qualify.

Bonus side bet

The bonus pays for a player hand of a straight or better, regardless of the dealer's hand and of whether the dealer qualifies. If the player bought a sixth card, the bonus is based on the best five of six cards and pays from the second, lower column. Win = bonus bet × odds; pay tables vary between casinos, the trainer's table is shown below.

Hand5 cards6 cards
Royal flush1000 to 1300 to 1
Straight flush500 to 1150 to 1
Four of a kind300 to 1100 to 1
Full house100 to 130 to 1
Flush50 to 115 to 1
Straight25 to 18 to 1

Hands below a straight do not pay the bonus; the bonus bet loses.

Example hands

PlayerKhKd7s7c2hDealerAcKc9d5s3h
Ante 100, play 200. The dealer has ace-king and qualifies. The player's two pair is higher: play 200 × 2 = +400, the ante is returned without a win. The player wins 400 and keeps the original bets.
Player3c5c9cJcKcDealerQsJd8h6h2s
Ante 100, play 200. The dealer has queen high and does not qualify. The player is paid 1 ante = 100 and the play bet is returned, even though the player has a flush. Alternatively the player buys a game for 100: if the dealer then qualifies and the flush is higher, the play bet pays 200 × 5 = 1,000 and the ante is returned without a win.
PlayerAdKh10s6c4dDealer8s8dQc7h3s
Ante 100, play 200. The player has ace-king, the dealer has a pair of eights: the dealer qualifies and wins. The player loses the ante and the play bet: 300.
Player (6 cards)9h9s9d4cJhJdDealerAsKs5h3d2c
Ante 100, bonus 100. The player had three nines, bought a sixth card for 100 and got a jack: a full house from the best five (9-9-9-J-J). The dealer has ace-king and qualifies. Play 200 × 7 = +1,400, the ante is returned, bonus from the 6-card column 100 × 30 = +3,000.
