Roulette is a game in which players bet on which pocket of the wheel the ball will land in. A European wheel has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero (0). Numbers 1–36 are split evenly between red and black; the zero is green.
Players do not compete against each other: every bet is a separate wager against the house. Winning bets are paid from a fixed pay table and losing bets are collected by the dealer.
Bets are placed on the table layout. Numbers 1–36 are arranged in three rows of 12, with the zero in its own box at the head of the layout. Each group of three numbers across the layout (for example 16-17-18) is a "street", and each of the three long rows is a "column". Below the numbers are the outside betting areas: dozens, red/black, even/odd, 1–18 and 19–36.
Inside bets are placed on the numbers themselves or on the lines between them. Payouts are quoted "to 1": a winning player receives the payout and keeps the original bet.
Outside bets go in the boxes outside the numbers and cover 12 or 18 numbers. The zero belongs to none of them: when 0 comes up, all outside bets lose (unless la partage / en prison applies, see below).
| Bet | Numbers | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 |
| Street, trio | 3 | 11:1 |
| Corner, first four | 4 | 8:1 |
| Six line | 6 | 5:1 |
| Dozen | 12 | 2:1 |
| Column | 12 | 2:1 |
| Red / black | 18 | 1:1 |
| Even / odd | 18 | 1:1 |
| 1–18 / 19–36 | 18 | 1:1 |
These payouts are standard in every casino offering European roulette and are the ones used in the trainer.
Call bets (French bets, sections) cover groups of numbers that sit together on the wheel. The player announces the bet and the amount, and the dealer places the chips on the layout. Each section uses a fixed number of chips; the amount is divided by that number to get the unit each chip is worth. In the trainer the unit is rounded down to a multiple of 5 and any remainder is returned to the player as change: Voisins for 900 plays at 100 a chip.
| Section | Numbers | Chips | Chip placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voisins du zéro (neighbours of zero) | 22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26-0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25 | 9 | 2 on the trio 0-2-3; 1 each on splits 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22, 32/35; 2 on the corner 25-26-28-29 |
| Tiers du cylindre (third of the wheel) | 27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33 | 6 | 1 each on splits 5/8, 10/11, 13/16, 23/24, 27/30, 33/36 |
| Orphelins (orphans) | 17-34-6 and 1-20-14-31-9 | 5 | 1 straight up on 1; 1 each on splits 6/9, 14/17, 17/20, 31/34 |
| Jeu zéro (zero game, zero spiel) | 12-35-3-26-0-32-15 | 4 | 1 each on splits 0/3, 12/15, 32/35; 1 straight up on 26 |
Every chip in a section is an ordinary inside bet paid from the normal table: straight up 35 to 1, split 17 to 1, trio 11 to 1, corner 8 to 1. Where a position carries two chips (the 0-2-3 trio and the 25-26-28-29 corner in Voisins) its payout is doubled.
Section positions are subject to the table limits. When a large amount pushes a position to its maximum, the rest of the amount is spread over fewer chips: in the trainer Voisins over 7, Jeu zéro over 3, Orphelins over 4, and Tiers still over 6.
A neighbours bet is a call bet on a number plus the two numbers on each side of it on the wheel: 5 numbers, one chip straight up on each (5 chips). For example, "17 and the neighbours" covers 2-25-17-34-6. Some casinos also accept other counts, such as one or three neighbours each side.
If one of the five numbers comes up, only the chip on it wins (35 to 1); the other four lose.
A complete bet (full complete, "maximum on a number") is a call bet covering every inside position that contains the chosen number: the number itself, all its splits, its street, all its corners and six lines. Each position takes its full count of chips: straight up 1, split 2, street 3, corner 4, six line 6.
| Number | Cost of the complete, chips |
|---|---|
| Middle row of the layout, 5–32 (e.g. 5, 17, 32) | 40 |
| Outer rows, 4–33 (e.g. 4, 6, 16, 18) | 30 |
| 0 | 17 |
| 1, 3 | 27 |
| 2 | 36 |
| 34, 36 | 18 |
| 35 | 24 |
The cost in money is the number of chips times the unit: a complete on 17 at 25 costs 40 × 25 = 1000.
If the complete number itself comes up, every position wins. For a middle number the payout is 35 + 4 × 34 + 33 + 4 × 32 + 2 × 30 = 392 units (straight 35, four splits of 2 chips × 17 = 34, street 3 × 11 = 33, four corners of 4 × 8 = 32, two six lines of 6 × 5 = 30). Together with the 40 chips of the bet that stay in play, the player receives 432 units.
If an adjacent number on the layout comes up, only the positions it shares with the complete win — a partial hit. When completes are placed on adjacent numbers their shared positions add up and must stay within the table limits.
Some casinos (mainly in France and on French roulette tables) apply a special rule to even-money bets (red/black, even/odd, 1–18/19–36) when the zero comes up:
In standard European roulette and in the trainer these rules do not apply: when zero comes up all even-money bets lose.
Rules and pay tables are checked against wizardofodds.com. Casinos may differ — see Variants and differences.
